Brooklyn Latin School is a public specialized high school in New York City, located in the Williamsburg neighborhood in Brooklyn. One of the top-rated high schools in the borough, Brooklyn Latin School ranks among the top ten public high schools in New York City. In addition, it is one of the nine specialized high schools in the city and the only one to offer an International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma.
Students work hard and challenge themselves with the school’s rigorous academic program. The curriculum focuses on building a solid liberal arts education. It emphasizes public speaking, written communication, and analytical thinking–all the relevant skills that prepare students for their scholarly endeavors. Students must take four years of Latin and science courses and write an extensive research paper on a topic of their choice. Brooklyn Latin also boasts a strong math and science program. First-year students begin with a conceptual physics course, followed by chemistry and two years of International Baccalaureate (IB) biology. Juniors and seniors can also take IB chemistry or IB physics, where students spend almost half their day immersed in college-level science work.
Community and Culture
The school’s culture is one of academic excellence and intellectual curiosity, emphasizing the importance of community and social responsibility. Students are encouraged to participate in over 30 extracurricular activities and clubs. Public speaking and debate are an integral part of the school culture. Students engage in Socratic seminars where they communicate formally, following specific discussion rules. Students must memorize and recite a poem or speech to their peers in discourses. Brooklyn Latin also requires students to lead their parent-teacher conferences.
College and Preparation
The school offers a variety of support services to help students flourish. These services include tutoring, counseling, and financial aid guidance.
