How to cram for the SHSAT

With less than three weeks to go until the originally planned date for this year’s Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT), many students are currently cramming for the SHSAT. How can you make sure you’re using your time effectively?

Here are some quick tips:

Use effective time management strategies. Make sure you take advantage of the official practice tests in the 2020-2021 Specialized High Schools Student Handbook. There are two official practice tests in the handbook. You should take the first one as a diagnostic to identify which areas you should focus your review. Here are the common categories that questions fall into:

Each time you take a practice test you should take time to investigate, understand, and reflect on your mistakes in a reflection journal. Use the answer explanations to understand why the answer you choose was incorrect and why a different answer choice was correct.

Target your weaknesses with more practice questions. Check out my textbook recommendations for more material.

Redo the questions you got wrong until you’ve mastered the concept. Keep all of your completed practice tests and question sets so you can redo them several times if necessary.
